Füsport - RT Motorsports by SKM - Kawasaki returns from Portimao with mixed feelings
Portimao, 11 August 2024 - WorldSSP300 team Füsport - RT Motorsports by SKM - Kawasaki had a challenging
race weekend at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimao, Portugal. But despite some setbacks, the
team still achieved a impressive podium finish.
Expectations for the Portimao race weekend were high after the promising results at the Most circuit. Moreover,
both Iñigo Iglesias and Carter Thompson showed in the first free practice session that they could perform well on
the beautiful Portuguese circuit. Both riders then finished in the top 10 in the Superpole, so everything was fully
on track.
In the first race, unfortunately, things did not quite go as hoped. Iñigo and Carter had to run wide on the opening
lap due to an action by another rider and fell back to 13th and 15th. However, with a strong catch-up race they
managed to fight their way back into the top 10. Iñigo even joined the leading group, but on the last lap he
collided with another rider causing an unfortunate crash. Carter showed he had the talent to finish on the podium
and took his second podium finish in only his second WorldSSP300 event.
Unfortunately, the second race was even less successful for the team. Iñigo had to retire early in the race due to a
technical problem, while Carter had to settle for 13th place.
Despite these setbacks, Iñigo Iglesias still remains in contention for the world title, trailing the leader by just 10
points. With three race weekends - and six races - to go, there is plenty of hope for a successful end to the season.
"You have one weekend every season where things just don't go the way you want. This was clearly one of those
weekends, especially Race 2," said team manager Rob Vennegoor. "But then when you still leave for home with a
podium, it's all relative. Besides, Iñigo still has a chance of winning the world title, so there's no doubt it's going to
be very interesting races this year!"
The next WorldSSP300 event takes place from 6 to 8 September at the French Magny-Cours circuit.
