Jerez, Spain - The adventure of Füsport - RT Motorsport by SKM - Kawasaki has come to an end with the last WorldSSP300 race weekend of 2024. Team owners Rob Vennegoor and Frank Krekeler decided earlier this season not to extend the project, which has seen many successes since 2019. Unfortunately, the final races in Jerez did not end as hoped, despite the chances of a glorious farewell.
Inigo Iglesias, who still had a chance of winning the world title at Jerez, crashed heavily at turn 13 on Saturday at Jerez, resulting in a broken tibia. It is obviously extremely disappointing for the team and him to end the season this way, but there is also a positive note: Iglesias finished third in the world championship.
Teammate Carter Thompson started the weekend strongly by taking pole position. He made an impressive start in the first race, but after two incidents with other riders - which Carter could do little to nothing about - he finished ninth. For Race 2, he also had high hopes, but crashed and had to retire.
Rob Vennegoor, team owner, expressed his emotions honestly afterwards: ‘I want to thank everyone: all team members, sponsors, Kawasaki, Frank and everyone involved in our adventure. Although it is good to stop, saying goodbye is hard for me. We would have liked our farewell to be very different. On Friday night the world title and maybe even two wins seemed attainable, but on Sunday afternoon we are empty-handed. Although of course we get to celebrate Inigo's third place. It's still a bit sour, but we take all the great memories, results, victories and friendships with us. Thanks again to everyone!’
Füsport - RT Motorsport by SKM - Kawasaki looks back with pride on the successes and experiences of the past years. In the coming period, the team will reflect on the past and perhaps the possibilities for the future. In whatever form and in whatever championship.
